Earth Day Fashion - Wearable Trash
Several years ago when we started to think about Earth Day, we looked for a T-Shirt. It was almost impossible to find a good shirt. Cotton is one of the most toxic plants on the planet ,using destructive pesticides in massive qualities. It is also one of the most subsidized crops, destroying the notion of fair competition across the planet. The solution was a post consumable shirt made from the poly found in water bottles. We still carry this shirt today. What about the inks ? We know the plastisoid inks are a bad choice, but so it turns out are water based inks, they contain minerals and metal deposits. The reality is that the water based inks simply do not work on the post consumable poly shirts.
Several years later things have come on a long way. Fair Trade organic cotton is now available from India. We hope that by this time next year we will be able to carry a Fair Trade organic Earth Day Shirt printed with natural water based inks. Time will tell.

In the mean time take a look at some of the amazing accessories we carry. Necklaces made from Flip Flops - Yes Flip Flops ! Thousands of discarded flip-flops wash up on the African shoreline. This indestructible rubber creates an environmental disaster for the marine eco-system as it spoils the natural beauty of the beaches, is mistakenly swallowed by marine feeders, and prevents hatching turtles reaching the safety of the sea. Realizing that this flotsam brings a limitless resource to coastal communities in Kenya,
UniquEco works with locals to collect and re-cycle discarded waste. The product range is diverse, from unique accessories and jewelry to one-off sculptures of amazing ingenuity, humor and beauty. UniquEco provides a sustainable wage for unskilled

beachcombers and bead-makers, to artisans and sculptors, allowing local people to maintain their way of life yet also provide for a better future for themselves and their families.
If Flip Flop jewelry is not your thing what about handbags made from candy wrappers. You can still smell the sweet small of candy. Most recently we found a wonderful artist in South Africa making these simple earrings from soda cans. We thing that with a little imagination and effort each of us can be a walking billboard for recycling and reuse this Earth Day.
